Oxycardiorespirogram (OCRG) Testing
What is OCRG ?
An OCRG or oxycardiorespirogram, also called a pneumogram or multichannel study, is a test that evaluates an infant's heart rate, breathing pattern, and blood oxygen concentration over a certain period of time. These tests can be performed on infants up to 9-12 months of age in the hospital or in our clinic.
How is the test done ?
An OCRG done in our clinic usually lasts 4 hours. During that time we evaluate the infant's heart rate, breathing pattern, and blood oxygen level
while asleep, awake, and feeding. The mother or other caregiver stays with their child during the test. Aside from feeding, the child lays in a crib that is next to the mother.
For mom, we have a comfortable glider where she can relax, read a book, or watch TV. During the test, a physician is always in the clinic, should a problem or question arise.
After completion, these tests can be interpreted immediately while the parent is getting ready to leave. This allows us to discuss the results and make any changes needed to the care plan for the patient without delay.
This test is different from a polysomnogram (PSG), or overnight sleep study. The primary difference is that a PSG also monitors brain activity.
We use the OCRG primarily in our evaluation of an infant's oxygen needs, unexplained apnea, or bradycardia.
